Signs of mice in your walls

Mice are quiet by day and busy at night. The first clue is often a sound inside the wall when the house goes still.

In short

Listen at night, look for droppings and gnaw marks, then trap and seal every entry point.

The signs

  • Light scratching or scurrying at night
  • Rice-sized droppings in drawers and under sinks
  • A musty, ammonia-like smell
  • Pets staring at or pawing one spot on the wall

Where they get in

Mice use gaps around plumbing, dryer vents, garage door corners, weep holes and where utility lines enter. A gap the size of a dime is enough.

What fixes it

  1. Trap along walls where activity is heaviest.
  2. Seal entry points with steel mesh, sealant and proper door sweeps.
  3. Remove food sources and clean up droppings safely.

See rodent control.

Questions

Will mice leave on their own?

Rarely. They breed quickly once they find food and shelter.
